TimelineNovember 6th, 1867: Marie Sklodowska Curie is born in Warsaw, Poland.
June 12, 1883: Marie (Then called Manya) graduates school as the first in her class (Lassieur 101) with a gold medal for excellence (Yannuzzi 130). This would generally be the end of most girl's education. She was 16 years old. 1886: Curie begins a governess position with the Zorawski family (Yannuzzi 130). 1891: Marie arrives at La Sorbonne, a prestigious university in Paris, France in the fall (Pasachoff 17). 1893: Marie graduates first in her class with a degree in physics (Yannuzzi 130) making her the first woman to graduate from Sorbonne with a physics degree. 1894: Marie Sklodowska meets Pierre Curie. She receives a second degree in mathematics (in June (Lassieur 101)). 1895: Marie and Pierre are married on July 26th. Wilhelm Roetgen discovers x-rays (Lassieur 101). 1897: Their first daughter, Irène Curie is born on September 12th. Marie begins to work towards a doctorate degree (Yannuzzi 130). 1898: They discover polonium on February 17th (Lassieur 101). They announce the discovery of radium on December 26th (Lassieur 101). Curie begins to use the term 'radioactivity' (Yannuzzi 130). 1903: Becomes the first woman to earn a doctorate degree. Becomes the first woman to win a Nobel Prize by winning an award in physics with Pierre Curie and Henri Becquerel. 1904: Their second child Eve Curie is born on December 6th. 1906: Pierre Curie is killed in a street accident on April 19th. Marie becomes the first female professor at La Sorbonne by taking her late husband's place (Yannuzzi 130). 1911: Wins second Nobel Prize in chemistry. She did not share the prize with any men. 1914: Radium Institute is complete. WWI begins and Curie makes the first radiology cars (petit-curies). July 4th, 1934: Marie Curie dies. 1995: Curie's remains are transferred to the Pantheon in Paris (Yannuzzi 130). She is the first woman to be buried there. |
